Sgt. Joseph "Joey" Christopher Smith passed away on Sunday, August 6, 2017 after suffering a massive stroke due to injuries he suffered while serving in the US Army in Afghanistan in 2004. He was born in twin to Leonard and Mary (Nobles) Smith in Baltimore, MD on October 31, 1970.

Sgt. Joseph "Joey" Christopher Smith passed away on Sunday, August 6, 2017 after suffering a massive stroke due to injuries he suffered while serving in the US Army in Afghanistan in 2004. He was born in twin to Leonard and Mary (Nobles) Smith in Baltimore, MD on October 31, 1970.
Joey spent his life serving his country spending 6 years in the Marine Corps and 15 years in the Army. He served one tour of duty in the Gulf War and four tours of Duty in Operation Iraqi and Enduring Freedom. It was during his fourth tour of duty in 2004 where he was severely injured after being attacked in Tarin Kowt, Afghanistan. Joey retired from the Army in 2008. After retirement, he spent his time with his fellow wounded warriors as part of Team Semper Fi doing wheelchair archery, air rifle shooting, swimming and riding his handcycle. Proud of his service in the Army, Joey was always a Marine. He was a patriot who loved his country. He had a caring and loving heart, always helping others.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard and Mary Smith; his sister, Deborah Curtis, twin sister, Christina Sokolowski, and his brothers, Delmus, Earl and George Smith, as well as a special nephew, Joshua Sokolowski.
Joey leaves behind his three children; Tyler Younce of Blacksburg, VA, and Sierra and Dakota Smith of Shelby, NC as well as his faithful companion and service dog, Jake.
A Service to Celebrate his life will be held on Sunday, 3:00 pm at Hanes Lineberry Sedgefield Chapel. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Sunday at the funeral home.
